How to pack a garage for moving
Garages hold the widest mix of item types in a typical house — tools, chemicals, yard equipment, sports gear — and some of what's in there, movers legally can't transport at all.
Start with what can't go on the truck
Gasoline, propane tanks, paint thinner, pool chemicals, and other flammable or hazardous materials are prohibited by essentially every interstate mover for safety and regulatory reasons. Tools
- Group hand tools by type in small, sturdy boxes — they're dense, so keep boxes on the smaller side
- Check your mover's policy on lithium-ion batteries before packing power tools with batteries attached — some carriers restrict them
- Wrap sharp-edged tools individually to protect both the tool and whoever unpacks the box
Yard and gas-powered equipment
Drain fuel tanks completely on mowers, trimmers, and similar equipment before moving day — equipment with fuel still inside is both a safety hazard and something most movers will refuse to load regardless of how it's packed.
Sports equipment and miscellaneous items
Bikes often travel best partially disassembled (pedals removed, handlebars turned) to reduce their footprint. Balls, rackets, and similar gear can go in general boxes, but keep anything with sharp points or edges (golf clubs, hockey sticks) bundled and padded separately.
