This company operates through a network of independently owned local agents rather than one central workforce. That means your crew, truck, and day-to-day service quality depend on which specific agent handles your move — the corporate brand sets standards and handles marketing and claims, but the people loading your truck work for a local business, not the parent company directly.

Atlas Van Lines in one paragraph

Atlas's individual agent crews get specific, detailed praise by name in most positive reviews, though the sample also includes one extensively documented bad experience with a disrespectful crew and poor communication.

What Atlas Van Lines typically offers

  • Full-service packing and unpacking
  • Loading, transport, and unloading for interstate moves
  • Storage-in-transit for moves where the destination isn't ready yet
  • Furniture disassembly and reassembly
  • Vehicle/auto shipping, in most cases
  • Corporate and government relocation, for larger agents

Confirm which of these your specific move includes — not every location or crew offers every service, especially for agent-network and franchise brands.

How booking with Atlas Van Lines works

  1. Request a quote online or by phone, and ask for an in-home or video walkthrough survey for anything larger than a 1-bedroom.
  2. Review the written estimate — confirm whether it's binding, non-binding, or binding-not-to-exceed, and what's included.
  3. Get written booking confirmation for your specific date, not just a completed survey.
  4. Crew arrives to pack (if included) and load on moving day; do a walkthrough with the crew lead before they leave.
  5. Your shipment transits to the destination — ask for a specific delivery window and how you'll be updated.
  6. At delivery, inspect items against the inventory sheet before signing off — note any damage in writing immediately.

Protection plans and valuation coverage

Like most interstate movers, Atlas Van Lines is required to offer basic released-value protection (about 60 cents per pound per item) at no extra cost — it rarely covers what your belongings are actually worth. Full-value protection costs more but covers repair or replacement at current value. Given the damage and claims themes in the reviews below, it's worth reading how estimate types affect your final bill and binding vs. non-binding estimates before you sign anything.

Where Atlas Van Lines is genuinely good

  • Specific agent teams (repeatedly named in reviews) get detailed, consistent praise across multiple different moves
  • Handles international as well as domestic moves, per reviewer experience
  • Strong communication cited on well-run jobs, including proactive updates from the crew

Where Atlas Van Lines falls short

  • One extremely detailed complaint describes a disrespectful crew, property damage, and a breakdown in communication with dispatch
  • A couple of isolated reports of unsafe/reckless driving by delivery trucks
  • Quality appears to depend heavily on which specific agent crew is assigned to your move

What customers are saying (39 of 757 reviews)

“Caused damage in the neighborhood. Semi was driving down residential streets where he shouldn't be (his destination was no where near). He just drove off, had to chase him down about 5 blocks away.”

“Not a fan of this company at all. They showed complete disregard for our home—leaving mud and grease everywhere, ignoring directions, and failing to communicate. They even used our bathroom and left it a mess. On top of that, they helped themselves to items from our refrigerator without asking. On day one, they didn’t properly introduce themselves or take the time to listen to my directions. Instead, they immediately asked me to go get them coffee. I agreed because I wanted the move to...”

We move a lot due to the military, and we’ve never had a more pleasant experience in the 10+ moves we have done. Thank you so much to these amazing people!”

“I called this company to get a quote and talked with a representative who called and gave us a quote. We decided to go with a another company, yet the representative continued to harass me with continuous emails.. then he proceeded to say nasty things to me because I told him we are going with another company.. I will NEVER refer this company to anyone ever.”

“They have bad drivers one of them driver cut me off in blue beacon truck wash line in Wisconsin truck number 103695 Almost hit in my truck & they should hire experienced drivers not trash drivers”

1/5 — Tejpal Tejpal, 2025-05-12

“I moved to Missouri from Georgia. The people unloading my belongings broke my barbecue grill, broke mirror in my antique cabinet, broke antique desk from 1700’s Grandfather clock and old 4 tier shelving unit broke glass out of it. I witness the head unloaded throw my shoe rack across the van. I put in small amount of repay for damages online. I have been calling with no pay back. Keeps saying another person took over. I just want my money.”

3/5 — Mary Sessler, 2025-05-10

“Completely unreliable. I called a few times because I am a USAA member and can possibly get a discount using this moving service. After 2 phone calls and an email, a representative finally reached out to me by email. I gave her a call and she sounded great on the phone and said she would call me and get everything figured out for the move. I never heard back from her, and when I tried calling her the next week she forwarded my call to voicemail and did not respond to a text message I sent...”

“I had a move set up with these folks which they sold to another company. When booking my move I was told my price was guaranteed and would not go up. The company they sold my move to showed up and charged an additional $4k. Atlas told me I must not have told them everything i had so it was my fault. I had told them I would need a semi trailer. The company that came out showed up with a 26 foot box truck half full of somebody else's stuff. I will never sign a contract with atlas again knowing...”

“We moved from Indiana to Georgia and had countless items broken and/or completely destroyed totaling over $7,000 in damages. We will NEVER use Atlas Van Lines again but will instead use UHaul Upack, PODS, Zippy Shell… any other company but Atlas.”

1/5 — Gary Huston, 2023-10-09

“Worst experience. Do not go with them. They will take your stuff which sits in warehouses for weeks. They do not respond to calls or emails. Terrible experience. Worst possible customer experience.”

1/5 — Stardust, 2023-10-02

“Our family has moved many times. We've used Bekins, United and Atlas. Bekins and United were great: good service and no loss or damage. Atlas was a train wreck: they lost and ruined tools, furniture and appliances. When we made a claim for $3,000; they offered $100. After multiple complaints they made a concession offer of $500 wrapped in an accusation that we were fabricating the loss and couldn't prove it. Avoid Atlas Van Lines - they're a poor performer and a bad actor.”

2/5 — Keegan O'Bannon, 2023-09-09

“Great agent good workers.”

5/5 — Kevin Reese, 2023-08-16

“They will "lose" your prized possessions, and offer you an absurd amount thats disrespectful. They don't care if its family heirlooms. Your business doesn't matter, they have government contracts they abuse.”

1/5 — James Andreini, 2023-08-10

“I was very disappointed with my experience with Atlas. We received 3 quotes. The 2 mentioned when to expect delivery but not Atlas. They underestimated the quote making it seem cheaper. After the move it came out the same as the other two. Atlas was misleading to get your business while Allied and Two Men and A Truck were honest with the dates and the quote. They could not give us a time until 24 hours prior making it difficult to schedule anything. We had to take time off from work. They...”

“Prager Moving & Storage (Naperville, IL) was fantastic! We moved out-of-state (Illinois to North Carolina), right after Christmas, while my mother was very ill with stage four cancer. Thank goodness this company knows what they are doing! ( I would have not been able to take a botched move.) I have been referred to as a perfectionist from time to time and I can't think of anything to improve our experience with Prager. From the initial contact with Steve (estimator), Holly (move coordinator)...”

Frequently asked questions

Is Atlas Van Lines a good moving company?

Is Atlas Van Lines legit?

Atlas Van Lines was founded in 1948 and is headquartered in Evansville, IN. We haven't independently verified its current USDOT/MC registration — check its active status yourself on FMCSA SAFER before booking, which takes under a minute.

How much does it cost to hire Atlas Van Lines?

We don't publish company-specific pricing since it varies by move — use our moving cost calculator for a general estimate by home size and distance, then get a written quote directly from Atlas Van Lines. As a agent cooperative, expect pricing and quote consistency to depend partly on which specific location or crew handles your move.

What's the most common complaint about Atlas Van Lines?

One extremely detailed complaint describes a disrespectful crew, property damage, and a breakdown in communication with dispatch

How do I get a quote from Atlas Van Lines?

Request a quote directly through Atlas Van Lines's website or by phone, and ask for an in-home or video walkthrough survey rather than a phone-only estimate for anything larger than a 1-bedroom — it produces a far more accurate number. Get the estimate type (binding, non-binding, or binding-not-to-exceed) in writing.

What should I do if Atlas Van Lines damages my belongings?

Photograph the damage before the crew leaves and note it on the delivery inventory sheet — don't sign a "no damage" confirmation until you've actually inspected everything. File a written claim promptly and keep every email; several reviewers report better outcomes after escalating in writing past the first-line claims team.

How far in advance should I book Atlas Van Lines?

4–8 weeks ahead for most moves, 8–12 weeks ahead during peak season (May–September). Get written confirmation of your actual booking, not just a completed survey or quote — a survey alone doesn't guarantee a crew is reserved for your date.

Is Atlas Van Lines a reliable interstate mover?

Does Atlas Van Lines handle international moves?

Yes, per multiple reviewer accounts of international relocations alongside standard domestic interstate moves.

Why do some Atlas Van Lines reviews describe a great experience and others a terrible one?

Atlas operates through an agent cooperative, so the specific crew assigned to your move matters more than the Atlas brand name itself — ask who your crew will be and, if possible, look for reviews naming that specific team.
